4 Parameter Checklist for Buying Used CNC Turret Punches

In the metal sheet processing industry, used CNC turret punches (such as Amada, Trumpf, or mainstream domestic brands) have always been a cost-effective choice. However, it is widely acknowledged that the market is complex: machines that look pristine on the outside may be severely worn internally. For purchasers and equipment managers, blindly pursuing low prices often leads to high subsequent maintenance costs and downtime losses. Selecting a machine cannot rely on "visual inspection" alone; it must rely on "testing." The following four key parameters directly determine the equipment's residual value and usability.
1. Machine Rigidity and Timing Accuracy: The "Skeleton" and "Nerves" of the Press
Many buyers easily overlook one point: a press is not just a tool for "punching holes," but also a precision forming equipment. If the machine rigidity is insufficient, micro-deformations generated during high-speed punching will drastically shorten mold life, and may even cause quality issues such as excessive burrs and dimensional deviations.
- Symptoms: Vibration marks appear when punching thin sheets, or dimensions become unstable after continuous production for a period of time.
- Causes: Aging of the bed casting, wear of guide rails, or excessive clearance between the slide and the guide rails.
- Countermeasures: On-site trial punching is essential. Observe the vibration of the machine when running at full load, and listen to whether the sound of the spindle and hydraulic system is stable. Pay special attention to checking slide parallelism; use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance of the slide at different positions, and the error should be controlled within 0.05mm. If obvious shaking or abnormal noise is found, reject the machine directly.
2. Mold Library Status: The Most Easily Hidden "Invisible Cost"
The efficiency of a CNC punch depends largely on the mold change speed. The mold library (usually with 60-120 tool positions) is one of the most expensive accessories of the entire machine. In second-hand transactions, the integrity of the mold library is often deliberately concealed.
- Symptoms: After the mold change command is issued, the robot arm moves jerkily, or inaccurate positioning causes mold collisions.
- Causes: Wear of the robot arm gears, loosening of positioning pins, or deformation of the tool position disk.
- Countermeasures: Request an on-site "full library cycle" execution. Have the machine automatically change from the 1st position to the last position, and then back, observing the repeatability of positioning each time. Check whether the mold clamping plates and stripper pins are broken or severely worn. If the mold library movement is sluggish, the repair cost may reach tens of thousands of yuan, and this amount must be deducted from the quotation.
3. Hydraulic System and Lubrication System: The "Blood Circulation" of the Equipment
CNC punches rely on hydraulics for main power and rely on lubrication for longevity. Once these two systems fail, the repair cycle is long and the cost is high.
- Symptoms: Slow pressure build-up, poor pressure holding capacity, or frequent dry friction marks on the guide rails.
- Causes: Wear of the hydraulic pump, jamming of valve spools, or blockage of the automatic lubrication pump and leakage of pipelines.
- Countermeasures: Check the cleanliness of the hydraulic oil; turbidity or emulsification indicates aging seals and water ingress. When running the machine, observe whether the fluctuations of the pressure gauge are stable. At the same time, manually trigger the lubrication system to confirm whether oil mist or oil film forms at each lubrication point. Lubrication failure is the root cause of guide rail and screw报废 (scrapping), which cannot be ignored.
4. CNC System and Electrical Aging: Is the "Brain" Dull?
The electrical cabinets of second-hand equipment often accumulate severe dust and aging wires. An outdated system version may lead to incompatibility with new software or new mold formats.
- Symptoms: Frequent system alarms, sluggish touch screen response, or parameter loss after power failure.
- Causes: Aging of motherboard capacitors, burning of contactor contacts, or battery depletion.
- Countermeasures: Check whether the electrical cabinet fan is operating normally and whether the filter screen is blocked. Test whether safety interlock devices such as emergency stop buttons and safety door switches are sensitive. Confirm whether the system backup is complete. If the seller cannot provide a system backup, the risk is extremely high because once the motherboard is damaged, restoring the original factory parameters will be extremely difficult.
Editor's Suggestion: When buying a used CNC turret punch, avoid "looking without testing." Bring experienced operators and mechanics to conduct at least 2 hours of idle running and actual punching tests. Remember, you are not buying a lump of iron, but a production system capable of continuously generating benefits. Only when parameters meet the standard is it truly cheap.
